Frequently Asked Questions About Tryouts

Q.  What should my daughter bring or wear to tryouts?
A.  Here is a list of items to bring or wear:

  • She should bring the paperwork listed in the answer to the next question below.
  • She should wear appropriate volleyball clothes (T-shirt or athletic top, spandex or comfortable shorts, volleyball or tennis shoes, and knee pads).
  • She should bring ankle braces if she wears them.
  • Your daughter may also want to bring a water bottle (with her name on it, in case it gets lost).
  • Long hair should be pulled back into a pony tail.

Q.  I am not sure what NVCA is all about....it seems like I need to pay for that in order for my daughter to tryout, is that correct?
A.  NCVA is Northern California Volleyball Association, which is the local chapter of the USA Volleyball Association.  All Clubs belong to their local chapter of the USAV.  The local chapter provides membership services, arranges tournaments, insures coaches and clubs adhere to standards, etc., so the registration fees support these activities. For more information, please see www.ncva.com

Q.  What option do I choose for NVCA?
A.  If your daughter joins a club, she will have to purchase an annual membership in order to participate in club activities.  If you are certain your daughter will be on a club team, you can purchase the annual membership now.  If you are not certain, you can purchase a Tryout membership and then, if she joins a team, purchase the annual membership.

Q.  Where does AVC hold tryouts?
A.  AVC will hold tryouts at the AVC Facility in San Rafael. The address is:       2145 East Francisco Blvd, San Rafael Ca.

Q.  Should my daughter arrive early for tryouts?
A.  It is a good idea to arrive at least 30 minutes before tryouts start in order to allow us to confirm your daughter’s registration and to give her a tryout number.  If you haven’t pre-registered online, you should arrive 45 minutes before tryouts start.

Q.  Can parents stay and watch the tryouts?
A.  No.  Parents are not allowed because it gets too crowded to allow parents inside the gym, and the players need to focus completely on the tryout activities.

Q.  What if parents have questions?
A.  A parent meeting is held at the beginning or end of each tryout. The process and club season will be presented in detail at this meeting. It is MANDATORY that a parent attend this meeting. This is the parent’s opportunity to ask questions.

Q.  Are there options if my daughter has a scheduling conflict that she can’t change?
A.  If your daughter absolutely can’t attend the tryout for her age group, you should email Katie and Jake as soon as possible to see if alternate arrangements can be made. There is not a lot of flexibility in these cases, but for special circumstances, sometimes something can be worked out.  Sometimes players can attend the tryouts for other age groups.  Also, our clinics are a great opportunity for our coaches to evaluate players. Jake and Katie MUST be notified in advance of attending a clinic for this purpose.

Q.  How are the AVC teams formed?
A.  You will tryout in your age group, which is determined by your birthday. You can find the table for the age group breakdown on the AVC web site under TRYOUTS.  Players can be selected for a team in their age group or for an older age group. If a player is young enough to play down an age group, this is also a possibility, and she may want to attend the younger age group as well as her age group.

Q.  How many teams does AVC have in what age groups?
A.  AVC has teams in the  10's, 11’s, 12’s, 13’s, 14’s, 15’s, 16’s, 17’s, and 18’s age groups. The specific number of teams we have in a certain age group depends on the number of players we have at tryouts.  We have at least 2 teams in every age group.

Q.  How many players are on a team?
A.  Teams consist of between 9 – 14 players per team.

Q.  How do you break down the teams in a certain age group?
A.  We have Black, Pink and White teams, which are our Power League teams.  Our White team may either be a Power League or an Premier League team, depending on the age group.

Q.  What is the difference between Black, Pink and White teams?
A.  Black teams have the players with the most experience. Pink and White teams have players who may be as athletic as players on the Black team but just lack the experience and need to get time on the court to better develop as players.

Q.  What if my daughter makes a Pink or White team at AVC and a 1’s team at a different club?
A.  We at AVC feel as though the training and the system you play in here make it the best fit for you. We have had players from Pink, White and Silver teams go on and play in high school at all levels as well as in college. We also feel the level of play and training in our Pink and White teams is equivalent to or better than that of other club’s top teams.

Q.  If I was on a Black team last year do I just move up with my team this year?
A.  Nothing at AVC is guaranteed. You have to earn your spot on a given team each year. It is possible you can go from the Black team to a Pink team the following year and also from a White or Pink team up to a Black team. It all depends on the makeup of the team and how everyone is developing as players.

Q.  Is it hard to make a team at AVC?
A.  We pride ourselves on being a top level club at AVC so we look for highly motivated, athletic, coachable kids who want to be part of a successful program. We demand a lot of our athletes so we take great care in making sure we have the right make up on our teams. Show up, work hard, have a great attitude, have good body language and be coachable and you will be in a good place.

Q.  What is the tryouts like?
A.  Players will spend time executing drills and also playing.  Our coaching staff spends the entire tryout evaluating EVERY player and looking at their skills and all other aspects as a player.  We move players around to different courts to evaluate them.  When the tryout is over all the coaches meet to discuss their observations and select candidates for their teams. As a club we take pride in making sure your daughter gets a fair opportunity to make all of our teams in her age group.

Q.  Do some players not get offered a spot on a team? Do they get cut?
A.  Yes we do have to make cuts and not everyone makes a team. We have a lot of players try out and we do our best to accommodate as many players as possible. We DO NOT cut 3rd, 4th and 5th graders.

Q.  What happens after the tryout is over?
A.  Coaches call their first choice players within 24 hours of the end of the tryouts. If a player decides not to join the team, other candidates are called until the position is filled.

Q.  If I haven’t heard from a coach by Sunday afternoon can I try out for Premier League?
A.   If you haven't heard from a coach by Sunday afternoon and are in the 13-17's age group, you can come to the 13's-17’s Premier League Tryout on Sunday evening to try out for a Premier League team at no extra cost.  Please be sure to come early to check-in so we can add you to the roster.

Q.  How long do I have to decide if I want to play Absolute?
A.  We need to know within 24 hours of you being offered the spot what you intend to do.

Q.  What if I want to wait and hear back from other clubs?
A.  We respect and understand that but after 24 hours if we haven’t heard back from you we will offer your spot to the next player on the list.

Q.  What if I do not hear from you within 48 hours? Does that mean I didn’t make a team?
A.  No. If you don’t hear from us within 48 hours it just means we are working on the teams. It is possible that you may still get a phone call offering you a spot.

Q. If I want to know where things stand can I call or email?
A.   We will post the status of the teams on our website as soon as they are finalized. Please check back to see if the team you are interested in is still open. If that team is not full, free to email Katie or Jake on Wednesday evening if you haven't received a call and your daughter is still interested in playing.

Q.  If I know I want to play AVC and I get offered a spot what is the next step?
A.  Call your coach immediately and verbally commit to playing on the team.

Q. What happens next?

A. We will have club meetings during the weeks following tryouts.  Dates and times will be announced after you make a team. This is when you meet your teams, coaches and parents and discuss the upcoming season and go over any and all important details. We also do our uniforms sizing, team pictures and parent/player meeting with the directors.

Q.  Once I have committed to playing what do I do next?
A.  We will have Letter of Commitment Signing during the Team meetings in the weeks following tryouts . Dates and times to be provided once you've made a team. You will be able to scan and email required forms or bring them by.

Q.  What will I have to bring to the letter of commitment signing meeting?
A.  A parent, a signed letter of commitment, and your initial deposit are requested at this time
